President’s Message

Mistakes and Investigations

People make mistakes. Officers make mistakes. We are all guilty of making bonehead decisions at one time or another. But as law enforcement officers it is our job to deal with others’ mistakes. We make a living holding people accountable for mistakes. So it should come as no surprise that when we make mistakes there is a long line of people waiting to point out to the world our mistakes. That is where the North Carolina Sheriff Police Alliance can help out. We are here to help you throughout the process. We will advise you on your options. We will not pressure you to make a certain decision. The ultimate decision is always yours. But we will advise you based on our experiences with similar situations. We will give you advice on how to conduct yourselves during any investigation. We will provide you with an attorney when one is needed. We are here to help our members survive mistakes. We will give you one hundred percent. As a member you deserve no less!

I am always amazed when an officer gets involved in a situation where he/she may need assistance and that officer doesn’t belong to a law enforcement organization. Just recently an officer was involved in a fatal shooting and that officer was not a member of any organization. Folks if ever there was a time that you need help, it is after you have shot someone. That is when you really need someone in your corner that has only your best interest at heart. If you have to employ deadly force you really need an attorney no matter the circumstances. There are other times when you need support. That is what an organization is supposed to provide you, especially during those times when things are tough.

Does making mistakes mean that a person is a bad person? No of course not. But the process itself is not an easy process to endure. The department is going to investigate all accusations fully. You can’t blame them for that. Let’s face it; there have been some cops that have done some bad things. So as an agency responsible to the public, all departments must investigate all allegations of wrong doing. When you are under investigation you feel all alone. I know because I have been investigated. I have also been the investigating officer. I know the process and how it works. I have been on both sides and I understand both sides. That is a huge benefit for anyone going through this difficult process. We are here for you. That is what you pay your dues for.

God Bless Y’all,
