Anti-Law Enforcement Senate Bill 1450

UPDATE TO THIS BILL- Senate Bill 1450: (Garrou): listed in this artice- Did not pass but would cause significant changes in retirement and health care. Watch for this next year. Would change retirement age to 60 years (without penalty) and require future employees to pay a portion of their health plan premium

All law enforcement Officers need to know about a Legislative Bill that has been introduced by Senators: Linda Gurrou, A.B. Swindell, and David Hoyle. That will rock the foundation of law enforcement should it pass. These three senators have finally come out from behind their cloak and dagger operations to show their true dislike for law enforcement officers all over the state.

SB 1450, State Retirement Age and Service Change would crush benefits of certain state law enforcement officers, hired after January 1, 2011, to retirement benefits of civilian state retirees and destroy years of hard work in obtaining retirement benefits that mirror the dates, stress and danger of the law enforcement profession.

SB 1450 would kick out retirement benefits, the separation allowance and mandatory 5% employer contribution into the employees 401(k) plan for all state law enforcement officers hired after January 1, 2011, that aren’t members of the Alcohol Law Enforcement Division (ALE), the State Highway Patrol, or the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). This would greatly decrease retired officer pensions and benefits for all other state law enforcement officers hired After January 1, 2011, The affected agencies are as follows: State Fairground Police, State Capital Police, All Campus police officers of the UNC System University Police. Community College Police, Department of Revenue, DMV License and Theft Agents, Marine Fisheries, NC Wildlife Officers an Sworn law enforcement Officers of the Secretary of State Office

Other directives will dismantle longevity pay, require a monthly contributing payment for the retirees’ health coverage, and provide changes in the Service Retirement Allowance, from age 50 with 15 years or age 55 with 5 or more years
to 55 with 25 years and 60 with 5 or more years

This bill does not include state officers prior to January 1, 2011 nor does it apply to county or local law enforcement officers.

While this bill does not affect local law enforcement it is a bridge to the future efforts of greed from many local municipalities as it relates to law enforcement officers. This bill passage would clearly be used attack our local law enforcement officers in the very near future.

We strongly encourage each of you to call your local Senator’s and express you dissatisfaction with this anti-law enforcement legislation sponsored by the
North Carolina Senators Linda Gurrou, A.B. Swindell, and David Hoyle. That will rock the foundation of law enforcement should it pass. We do not need leaders such as this representing law enforcement officers. They do not deserve that honor.

Our state Law enforcement members are being well represented by our NC Sheriff Police Alliance in the fight against SB1450. Shame on Linda Gurrou, A.B. Swindell, and David Hoyle for their anti-law enforcement legislation and attack on law enforcement! One more reason change is needed in November. They must GO!

We have met with numerous legislators who we know will not support this effort of the bill sponsors. While we feel comfortable we can defeat this legislation we cannot approach it as we already have.
